Your Website on Mobile: The Mistakes That Drive Customers Away

Most people visit on their phones, but many websites are still designed for desktop. The mobile mistakes that make customers give up, and how to avoid them.

Grab your phone and open your business website right now. This is how most of your customers see you, not on a big computer screen. Even so, many websites are still designed with desktop in mind and just "squeezed" onto mobile later. The result is an experience that pushes people away instead of attracting them, and this often comes with a slow mobile website.

The Mistakes That Cost You Customers

  • Tiny text that forces zooming. If someone has to pinch the screen to read, they are already annoyed. Legible font without zoom is the bare minimum.
  • Small, cramped buttons. On a touchscreen, small buttons lead to wrong taps. Each button needs enough size and spacing to be hit on the first try.
  • A phone number that is not clickable. On mobile, phone and text/chat should open the call or conversation with one tap. Making customers copy and paste is losing people along the way.
  • A pop-up that covers everything with a tiny "x" in the corner. On mobile, this becomes a trap.
  • A page that "spills" sideways and requires horizontal scrolling. A classic sign of a non-adapted site.

Think About the Thumb

On mobile, navigation happens with the thumb, and it reaches the bottom and center of the screen best. The main actions, like calling, viewing a menu, or requesting a quote, work better when they are within natural reach, not at the distant top. This is the heart of mobile conversion.

Less Is More on Mobile

The space is small and attention is short. Instead of pushing everything at once, guide the user: one piece of information per block, a clear path to the action. A lean menu, short sections, and one main call to action always visible.

The Honest Test

Hand your phone to someone who does not know your site and ask them to "get in touch." See how many taps and how much scrolling it takes. If they get lost or give up, your real customer will too, just without telling you.
