Backup, Updates, and Security: What Keeps Your Site Alive and Out of Danger

What can go wrong with a website, from going offline to being hacked to losing everything, and the minimal maintenance that prevents headaches, explained for non-technical folks.

A website is like a car: once it's built, it still needs maintenance to keep running. Most owners only remember this when the site goes down right in the middle of a campaign, or when they discover it's been hacked, or when everything disappears and there's no backup. None of this is bad luck; it's a lack of three basic precautions. I'll explain each one without jargon, so you know what to demand from whoever manages your site.

What Can Go Wrong

  • Going offline. The hosting fails, the domain expires without warning, the security certificate lapses, and customers hit an error page.
  • Getting hacked. An outdated site is an open door. Attackers inject ads, scams, or viruses into your page, often without you noticing right away, until Google flags your site as dangerous.
  • Losing everything. An error during an update, an attack, or a hosting failure, and your content is gone. Without a backup, you start from scratch.

All three have cheap prevention. Here's how.

1. Backup: Your Insurance Policy

A backup is a complete copy of your site stored elsewhere, so you can restore it if something goes wrong. It's the most important item and the most ignored. The basics:

  • Frequency. At least one copy per week; if your site changes often (like an online store or active blog), do it daily. For example, Stau includes daily backups in its hosting plans.
  • Store it elsewhere. A copy on the same server that might fail is useless. The idea (known as the "3-2-1" rule, simplified) is: more than one copy, in more than one place, with at least one off the main server.
  • Test it. A backup that's never been tested might be corrupted. From time to time, confirm you can actually restore it. A backup that can't be restored isn't a backup; it's an illusion.

2. Updates: Close the Doors

Sites built on platforms like WordPress rely on various add-ons ("plugins"). Each one, when outdated, becomes a potential vulnerability. Most hacked sites fall victim precisely because of an old plugin with a known flaw.

Maintenance is simple: keep the platform and add-ons updated, and remove what you don't use (fewer parts, fewer doors). If your site is on WordPress, it's also worth reading about WordPress performance; updates and speed go hand in hand.

3. Basic Security: What You Can't Skip

  • Security certificate (HTTPS) always active. That's the padlock next to the address. Without it, the browser scares visitors and Google penalizes you. I covered more in padlock, domain, and hosting and in SSL and HTTPS.
  • Strong passwords and two-step verification. "admin" and "123456" are an invitation. Use a long, unique password, and enable two-step confirmation in your dashboard; it's a double lock on the door.
  • Limit access. Only those who need it should have admin login. The fewer keys in circulation, the lower the risk.

4. Don't Forget Renewals

Your domain (your address) and security certificate expire. A forgotten domain can be lost, and even registered by someone else. Set everything to auto-renew and use a contact email you actually read. It's the kind of silly oversight that costs a lot.

The Summary for Peace of Mind

Recent, tested backups, an updated platform, active HTTPS, strong passwords, and automatic renewals. With these, the three nightmares, going offline, getting hacked, losing everything, practically disappear.

The best part is not having to think about it. With Stau's hosting plans, backups, security certificates, and maintenance are already handled, so you can focus on your business.
